When it comes to child behaviour, Behaviour Analysts highlight that it is important to not just focus on the negatives but to also recognise the positives. The following are a list of behaviours a child may present with, that studies in the field of Behaviour Analysis show, can sometimes automatically be deemed as negative by parents, but when looked at from another perspective, it can be recognised that these are positive points as well, if parents choose to focus on their child’s strengths.
If a child is defiant – It also means that they hold strong beliefs, & are bold & determined. When a child behaves defiantly, this can make parenting more difficult, but on the plus side, if a child is defiant, they are more likely going to stick to what they believe is right, & not be pressurised into following the crowd just because everyone else is.
If a child is bossy – It also means that they are a natural leader, they are not afraid to speak up, & that they are confident of their own ideas. The negatives of being bossy, can mean sibling rivalry & bickering if the child’s siblings think that they are looking to get their own way all the time. However, a child who is bossy could be the perfect candidate to grow up to be their own boss, run a business, lead people, etc.
If a child is demanding – It also means that they know what they want & they are willing to ask for it. A child being demanding is one of those behaviour challenges that parents can find wears them out, but it also indicates that the child may get more from life as they will be willing to ask for it.
If a child is impulsive – It also means that they are spontaneous & free-spirited. Being impulsive, Behaviour Therapists point out means a child may have more difficulty with managing anger, as they make have a shorter fuse due to the impulsivity, but it also means that they waste no time & get stuck into productive things that they want to do.
If a child is stubborn – It also means that they are persistent with a never give up attitude. In terms of from a negative perspective, if a child is stubborn, it means that their tantrums may last for a longer amount of time than a child who is not as stubborn, but on a positive note, if a child is stubborn, it also means that if there are tough things they come up against when trying to achieve their goals in life, they will persist for longer than those who are not as stubborn & so more likely to succeed in those situations.
If a child is talkative – It also means that they are a good communicator, & connect easily with others. In situations such as in a school setting, where a child is expected to at times, not talk & instead focus on their work, children who are talkative can get into trouble for talking too much. However, being a talker is a well-known positive trait in most other settings.
If a child is attention-seeking – It also means that they are looking for connection & interaction from others. The term “attention-seeking” has a negative connotation attached to it. However, it simply means that person is looking for connection with others, & that is a beautiful thing.
Remember… It Is All About Perspective & Don’t Forget To Focus On A Child’s Strengths.
