Behaviour Analysts highlight that when a parent understands their child better, through knowing the right kind of questions to ask children, it helps the parent to get a better understanding of their child’s behaviour then also.
In terms of when parenting, the following questions are a lovely way for parents to get a better insight into their child:
What Is Your Happiest Memory?
What Makes You Laugh?
Where Is Your Favourite Place To Visit?
What Is Your Favourite Thing About Yourself?
Who Is Your Best Friend & Why?
What Are You Excited For Right Now?
What Do You Know How To Do That You Could Teach Others?
Can You Remember A Time That You Had A Really Good Day? Tell Me About It.
What Is Something That You Would Like To Learn How To Do?
What Makes You Happy?
When a parent shows an interest in their child by knowing the kind of questions to ask children, Behaviour Therapists underline that this puts the message across to the child that the parent cares. In turn, when a child feels like their parent cares & really wants to get to know them, this strengthens the bond between the child & the parent.
Child Therapists point out that, it also allows the parent to develop a more rounded picture of their child, & when a parent has a better understanding of their child & what makes them tick – This better allows the parent to put strategies in place that are going to be effective, to help them with any behaviour challenges that may arise, such as managing anger, addressing sibling rivalry, attention-seeking behaviour, etc.
Studies in the field of Behaviour Analysis show that when strategies that are effective are put in place, it makes it more likely that the child will present with more positive behaviour going forward, & have less tantrums, etc.
