Behaviour Analysts Recommend That Parents Make A Conscious Effort To Work On Their Child’s Social & Play Skills At Home. This Then Allows For The Child To Implement These Skills Independently When In Other Social Environments Such As When At School, On Playdates, At Activities, Etc., When Their Parents Are Not There To Guide Them.
If The Child Doesn’t Learn These Really Important Social Skills, (That Will Stand To Them All Throughout Life), Studies In The Field Of Behaviour Analysis Show That, This Increases The Chance Of The Child Being Triggered In Social Situations When They Don’t Want To Share Or Take Turns, Etc. In Turn, This Can Lead To Behaviour Challenges, Such As Difficulty Managing Anger, Having Tantrums, Sibling Rivalry, Attention-Seeking Behaviour, Etc.
Behaviour Therapists Highlight That Working On This Area Of Child Behaviour While Parenting, Will Greatly Help The Child In Navigating Their Social Interactions More Smoothly.
An Example From A Child Therapist On How A Parent Could Practice Teaching Social & Play Skills To Their Child:
– The Parent Could Create A Choice Board With Photographs On The Choice Board Of Different Games/Activities.
– These Activities Should Be Of Short Duration In Time, For E.g., The Game Where Each Player Takes Turns At Pressing The Crocodile’s Teeth.
– Let One Sibling Choose Which Activity They Would Like To Play First.
– Then, When This Short Game Ends, It’s The Other Sibling’s Chance To Choose The Next Short Game From The Choice Board.
– Continue To Do This On A Consistent Basis Until Both Siblings No Longer Have Difficulty Waiting Or Taking Turns.
This Teaches Each Child To:
– Take Turns At Choosing What To Play
– Take Turns Taking Their Go While Playing
– Wait For Their Turn Choosing What To Play
– Wait Their Turn Taking Their Go While Playing
*It Is Best To Start Off With Games Of Short Duration To Set The Child Up For Success.
