Behaviour Analysts highlight that child behaviour can be influenced in such a positive way by their parents being good role models for them. As a child, children think that their parents can do no wrong & they look up to them. This means that if a parent sets a poor example in terms of how the parent lives their life & how the parent behaves, as the child believes that their parent can do no wrong, they feel that this standard of behaviour is acceptable, & so are more likely to present with this type of behaviour themselves, either when they are young, or further down the line.

This is why, when parenting, Behaviour Therapists strongly recommend that parents model the behaviours they would like to see from their child – as what children see their parents do, the are most likely to do themselves.

As the saying goes, “Children will do as you do, not as you say.”

Examples Of Ways In Which Parents Can Be Positive Role Models For Their Child:
– For the parent to listen when their child is talking to them.
– For the parent to show that they are capable of managing anger well.
– By the parent being mannerly to their child & to other people.
– Etc.

Studies in the field of Behaviour Analysis, show that when a parent sets a good example for their child with regards to their own behaviour, it makes it less likely that their child is going to present with negative behaviour challenges such as having tantrums, sibling rivalry, negative attention-seeking behaviour, etc., & will instead display a lot more positive behaviours.

Child Therapists point out that children are ALWAYS watching & taking everything in, & their parents have the most influence on them over everyone else in their world, so it is recommendable to make it count in the best way possible.
