The Following Is A Brief List Of Life Skills For Children That Are So Beneficial For Parents To Teach Their Child When It Comes To Parenting & Child Behaviour, Which Will Form A Good Foundation For The Child For Their Adult Life:
1) How To Introduce Themselves – Behaviour Analysts highlight the importance a first impression makes, & so this is why it is important for parents to convey this message to their child. Studies in the field of Behaviour Analysis show, that children are likely to imitate the behaviours of their parents, & so parents can use this to set a good example. The parents can do this by demonstrating good people skills by how they greet & interact with people for the first time, & so it will make it more likely the child will incorporate it into their own behaviour as “the done thing”.
2) How To Ask Questions To Get To Know Someone Better – Sometimes when a person’s social skills are not up to scratch, a person can tend to lean towards talking about themselves as a recurring topic of conversation. This can be viewed as being self-absorbed or attention-seeking by the other person, & so that is why according to Child Therapists it is so important for parents to teach life skills for children such as how to show an interest in the person they are talking to in order to connect with that person & to make a positive impression on them.
3) How To Take Care Of A Pet – Taking care of a pet is a big responsibility. By giving some of this responsibility to your child, this will help to show them the magnitude of the role it is to have a pet, & it will make them more aware of what it is like to have to think about someone else & not only have to be concerned with themselves. There is also a therapeutic benefit of being around animals that will also be of huge benefit to the child.
4) How To Do The Laundry – Behaviour Therapists point out that by giving a child age appropriate chores & responsibilities, this leads to the child recognising their own ability to do things, & it increases their confidence & self-esteem.
5) How To Tidy Up After Themselves – Sometimes, when parents start to introduce life skills for children such as tidying up after themselves, it can be met with resistance by the child, which may display itself in the form of tantrums in an attempt to get out of having to do it. However, once it becomes solidly incorporated into their day to day routine, it becomes second nature to them & they do it more readily.
6) How To Cook Basic Meals – This is a life long skill that can be taught from when your child is young under the right supervision, & then the parent can gradually give them more independence with it as they get older. By teaching them young, there is a higher chance of the child taking an interest in it, & it will also equip them to be able to cook for themselves when they are older.
7) How To Drive – This is a fundamental skill that is essential for everyone, not only to know how to do, but most importantly, to be good at. If an effort is made to teach one sibling how to drive, but the same effort is not made with another sibling, this can lead to sibling rivalry, & also it limits the level of independence that child can have until they learn how to.
8) How To Budget – This is a very important one. If children grow up for 18 years never properly learning how to budget, & then they become an adult, it is very unlikely that they will handle their money well. However, if you start at a young age, & teach your child how to effectively manage money, then this will stay with them when they are older & stand to them greatly throughout their life.
9) How To Have Healthy Boundaries – Sometimes, when a person wears themself too thin, by trying to keep everyone else happy, by being all things to all people, this can lead to their patience also wearing thin as their energy levels deplete & they become burnt out, which in turn can lead to difficulty managing anger, etc.
10) How To Think Outside The Box – By teaching a child how to think outside of the box, it will mean that they will be more equipped to effectively address more of the situations they come up against, as they will be more creative in their thinking. By not thinking outside the box, this can lead to difficulty coming up with solutions to things, which in turn can lead to frustration & anger, which in turn can at times present itself in the form of behaviour challenges.
