When parenting, a parent can at times get caught off guard in terms of how to address behaviour their child is presenting with. During times like these, the parent may not know how to handle the situation appropriately in that moment, be it their child presenting with negative child behaviour in the form of sibling rivalry, displaying attention seeking behaviour in public, or refusing to do as asked, etc. – Behaviour Analysts Stress That It Is Important That The Parent Does Not Give It A Big Reaction.
When a parent is caught off guard when different behaviour challenges presents themselves, Behaviour Therapists highlight that the parent’s immediate reaction can often be to get annoyed, which can then lead to the parent having difficulty managing anger. Studies in the field of Behaviour Analysis indicate that when a parent’s emotions get heightened, the child’s emotions usually escalate to match this, which in turn can lead to the child displaying negative behaviours such as tantrums, etc.
Child Therapists recommend that it is best for the parent to not beat themselves up for not knowing what the correct way to handle it was, & for them to move on at the time.
Then afterwards, it is beneficial for the parent to stop & take some time to think about how to address behaviour such as this, so that the next time it happens – the parent is ready & has a plan of action as to how they are going to respond, making it more likely that the parent will handle it a lot better the next time around.
