The following are points from a Behaviour Analyst highlighting the many benefits of using visuals:
Studies in the field of Behaviour Analysis show, that visuals help children to prepare for what is going to happen & in doing so, reduce anxiety for children who do not like to be unprepared. This can be greatly beneficial, as when people are anxious, they are often more irritable & more easily frustrated. Having visuals to help prepare a child for what will happen, helps reduce the need for managing anger, as it reduces the likelihood that there will be any behaviour challenges such as outbursts/tantrums, etc.
Visuals help children to see what their parent is trying to convey across to them & avoid confusion. Behaviour Therapists point out that this is especially helpful if the child has Autism or learning difficulties. Seeing something visually can help make understanding easier, & in turn parenting easier also.
According to Child Therapists, visuals are useful aids in helping transitions between activities to go more smoothly. When transitions go more smoothly, there is less chance of negative child behaviour occurring as a result.
Having visuals such as a chore chart in place in the home environment, can help keep track of who does what, to prevent sibling rivalry & bickering over whose turn it is to do what job.
Reward Charts are also visual ways that when implemented in an ethically correct manner, can be a beneficial way of giving a child lots of positive attention for positive behaviour. When a child gets enough positive attention from their parents, this reduces the likelihood of the child resorting to presenting with negative attention-seeking behaviours in order to get attention, as they are getting adequate positive attention already.
One of the most beneficial advantages of visuals are that they can be used across different environments, for example, home, school, etc., & so lend themselves to a multitude of different ways in which visuals can be used to benefit children.
