In this article, a Behaviour Analyst discusses the benefits of one to one time, in terms of the advantages for both the parents & the child, of the parents making the time, for separate, quality one-to-one time with their child when parenting.
1) It Gives Parents Insight Into What Is Happening In Their Child’s Lives – Child Therapists underline the importance of parents making the time in their busy schedule to give their child, consistent, daily, quality one-to-one time as it allows for the parents to communicate with their child in a way that allows them to see what is going on in their child’s world, which in turn sends the message to the child that their parents care about & have an interest in the things that are important to the child.
2) It Shows The Child That You Are Interested In Spending Quality Time With Them – A big thing as a child is sibling rivalry with the other children in the family. By parents making the time, for quality one-to-one time with each child, studies in the field of Behaviour Analysis show, that this then reduces the need for sibling rivalry, as each child is getting their own time & attention from their parents, which in turn helps to reduce the need for the child to present with attention seeking behaviours also.
3) It Allows Parents To Show Their Child The Fun, Relaxed Side Of Their Personality – Often when parenting, children the majority of the time see parents being serious as they are trying to get things done & are in charge of everything running smoothly. However, during one-to-one time, all other distractions are reduced/eliminated, which in turn gives the parents a window where they can relax, give their child their full focus & attention, & get to have fun. There is nothing a child loves more than to see a parent get in touch with their inner child & to see them having fun, & so this is a great way to make a strong connection.
4) It Builds The Bond Between Parent & Child, & Strengthens Their Relationship – When a child has a good relationship with their parents, Behaviour Therapists highlight that this tends to have a positive impact on child behaviour, with less tantrums or other behaviour challenges tending to occur. Children are more likely to be better at managing anger when their bond is strong with the other person.
5) It Provides A Good Foundation For The Parent & Child To Build On & Enjoy Throughout The Rest Of Their Life – When as a child, parents make the time for one-to-one time with a child on a regular basis, this child then grows up with a strong bond with that parent, making great memories together, & as a result is so much more likely to maintain that strong bond into their adult life.
