Often times parents become so consumed with all the things they have to do, & all the advice they feel they should abide by, that they forget so fundamentals when it comes to child behaviour. So, here are some important reminders for parents.
1) No Parents Have It All Together – Even The Shiny, Happy Ones On Instagram:
Sometimes you may have difficulty managing anger when the behaviour seems to be constant, & the good days seem far fewer than the bad, but always remember that everyone is in the same boat, & people only show what they want to show on social media.
2) When It Comes To Child Behaviour – Behaviour Analysts Reassure That No Child Will Behave All The Time:
There will be tantrums. There will be defiance. But there will also be good days when the behaviour is good, & positive memories are made.
3) You Are Doing Your Best:
Parenting isn’t easy. Take it one day at a time, & keep trying your best. You will get there, & there will be good times too.
4) Take Time To Reflect On The Good Things:
Studies in the field of Behaviour Analysis show that taking the time to reflect on the good things, helps to focus in on the positives, & change your perspective to a much more positive one.
5) Parenting Doesn’t Come With A Manual – So, Stop Beating Yourself Up:
Some things are inevitable like sibling rivalry & lots of other behaviour challenges. However, having a good bond & good boundaries with your child, will help overcome these obstacles, & it will all be ok.
6) You Are A Great Mum/Dad:
Child Therapists often come across many parents who doubt their ability in terms of how well they are doing as a Mum or Dad. It is good to give yourself credit for this & to give credit to other Mums & Dads you know too. You never know who’s day you might make.
7) There Is Nobody Better Than You In Your Child’s Eyes:
This is why at times your child will display attention-seeking behaviours, as it is your attention & interaction they seek the most. It’s important to be aware of this need, & to meet it, & both you & your child will find it fulfilling.
8) You Will One Day Look Back & Reminisce On These Times:
These will be the good old days in times to come. It is good to acknowledge that now, so that you can enjoy them while you are here.
9) Give Yourself Credit:
People are generally so hard on themselves. Ease up on yourself & give yourself credit for the great job you are doing. It will spur you on & motivate you.
10) Relax:
Behaviour Therapists highlight one of the most important reminders for parents, is the importance of taking time for yourself & making sure you incorporate self-care into your day-to-day life, in order for you to be able to show up as your best self for your child.
